Diamond Engagement Rings Are The
Stuff Dreams Are Made Of...
Purchasing an engagement ring is
a well-known tradition in the Western world. The engagement ring is an
indication that the woman is engaged. Friends and relatives usually
ooh and ahh over the ring, as this is custom too!
In the United
States as well as the United Kingdom, it will be worn on the left-hand
ring finger, and in some countries, it will be worn on the right hand.
Speaking of custom, ordinarily an engagement ring is considered a gift
from the prospective groom to his bride to be upon acceptance of his
marriage proposal. Most consider it a seal of this acceptance for the
future marriage.
While some engagement stones are usually affixed to an engagement
ring, in the United States and a few other countries, the typical
engagement ring contains at least one diamond. Other stones that may
be used are emeralds, moissanites, rubies, or sapphires. The cost of
an engagement ring will vary depending on the materials used, such as
gold, silver or platinum, and the value of the gemstone.
Looking through various
diamond engagement rings means that
you will need to educate yourself regarding diamonds. For instance,
you may have heard of the four C’s? These are the Carat weight, its
Clarity, the Color of the diamond and the Cut.
First, let’s look at Carat weight. Gold is measured in Karats, not
Carats, and diamond Carats means the accepted weight of one Carat is
200 milligrams, which your jeweler may refer to as 100 points. They
all mean basically the same.
Clarity is the degree of flawlessness in the diamond. Ratings of
diamonds begin at FL, which refers to a totally flawless diamond. IF,
is internally flawless which means that with additional polishing of
the stone it will be in the FL category. VVS1 through VVS2 means flaws
are not visible to the naked eye. VS1-VS2, again needs a microscope
but flaws are easier to find. SI1-SI2, flaws can be seen easily
through a microscope. I1-I3, flaws are seen with the naked eye, which
of course are considered highly inferior.
Color ranges are described by use of an alphabetic hierarchy.
Completely colorless diamonds will range from D, E and F, which is
near colorless, to increasing yellow and finally to yellow colored
diamonds all the way up to Z.
Cut refers to not only the finished shape of the diamond, be it
square, round, heart-shaped, marquise, etc. but also to the style of
the cut. You should ask the jeweler to show you
diamond engagement rings with stones
cut in step cuts, emerald cuts and brilliant cuts, as the aesthetics
of each is a personal matter of choice. By the way, the girdle where
all the facets meet, should not be so thin as to render the diamond
brittle and subject to breaking or chipping.
Regardless of the settings you may find when looking at
diamond engagement rings, keep in
mind that it is your fiancé who will wear the ring for the rest of her
life. Thus, in today’s modern world, most couples make this choice
together, though in the olden days of courtship it was typical to
present a ring while asking the lady to marry.
